Blue Christmas Without You

I'm writing you a letter and I don't know where to start
I get a little lonely every year around this time
The cold wind is blowin' and the streets are getting dark
Nobody ought to be all alone on Christmas
Do you remember sleigh riding in the snow
And dancing all night to "Baby, Please Come Home"?
The music plays all night in Little Italy
Today's celebration is bittersweet
It was a blue christmas without you...

I'm writing you this letter 'cause I still believe
Things are different since you've been here last
Can't you stay a little while, with me, right here?
Childhood dreaming is a thing of the past
I'm all grown up but I'm the same, you'll see
Maybe you can bring us some hope this year
I got high hopes for 2014
Give me help, strength, love, peace
Give me a soul, a night of fearless sleep
Dream, baby dream...

  1. The title of the blog is made of two songs, ‘Blue Christmas’ and ‘Without You’.
‘Blue Christmas’ (written in the 1940s by Billy Hayes & Jay W. Thompson) has been recorded by many artists including Elvis Presley, The Beach Boys and Johnny Cash. Bruce Springsteen sang it at The Carousel in Asbury Park, New Jersey, on December 7th, 2010; it was the last E Street Band performance by Clarence Clemons. It is available on the DVD box set “The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town” released in 2011.
‘Without You’ is a 1995 song by Bruce Springsteen. He can be seen recording it with a reformed E Street Band in the documentary “Blood Brothers” (available in VHS and DVD). An audio version of the track ‘Without You’ was released on a bonus/promo CD (housed in a card sleeve) and distributed with the VHS in some countries. This EP, entitled “Blood Brothers”, includes 5 tracks recorded with the newly reformed E Street Band (featuring both Steve Van Zandt and Nils Lofgren).
This is also where the first studio version of ‘High Hopes’ by Bruce Springsteen can be heard (though it also features on the CD single ‘Secret Garden’ released in 1997). ‘High Hopes’ was written in 1990 by Tim Scott McConnell and first recorded by his band The Havalinas. Bruce Springsteen has since re-recorded the track with guitarist Tom Morello, for his 2014 album, also entitled “High Hopes” and which includes a cover of the 1979 Suicide song ‘Dream Baby Dream’.
The text of this blog is made of quotes from the 1992 song ‘All Alone on Christmas’, sung by Darlene Love and written by Steve Van Zandt for the movie Home Alone 2 (except for the last line of the first paragraph and the last four lines of the second paragraph). The remaining words are mostly taken from ‘High Hopes’.
